plextor px-716uf not reading cds or dvds

another one of these external babies wont read any of my cds or dvds. well i opened her up and fiddled with the rails a bit, and bingo, it can read everything fine.
will test burning later.
$250 external usb/firewire 16x dvd+-rw goes kersplat because of a lack of grease on the rails. pathetic.
