google chrome does not work on windows 2000 ?

solutions for chrome on win2k at the bottom of this post!
darn! i likes me my win2k
http://www.google.com/chrome/thankyou.html
user-agent linux gets you a linux chrome email subscribe url
user-agent googlebot gets an html page that works sorta…
using filemon doesnt really tell me what the installer is looking for.
it cant find wship6.dll, using wship6.dll from winxp gives a new error
The procedure entry point RtlIpv6AddressToStringExW could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll
installation failed. please try again. error code = 0×80040154
looks like chromesetup is using some xp crap for ipv6, why did they enable this by default for the beta?
anyone have any tricks for getting around this ?
downloading what the 400k chromesetup.exe grabs
http://cache.pack.google.com/chrome/gears/0.4.17.0/gears-chrome-opt.msi
http://cache.pack.google.com/chrome/install/149.27/chrome_installer.exe
doesnt seem to help, running chrome_installer makes a .log file in temp
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp>cat chrome_installer.log
[0902/204401:ERROR:main.cc(252)] Chrome only supports Windows XP or later
next step is to find where it installs chrome on xp and zip it and bring it to win2k.
ok, after copying chrome.exe over to win2k box and moving the chrome.dll where it can find it. i get a new error! yay new errors!!!
the procedure entry point heapsetinformation could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll
this one looks like a game ender. unless chrome.exe can be patched or trick it into using a diff kernel32.dll without bringing my box down.
anyways, you can find daily builds of chrome aka chromium here:
http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/waterfall/
http://code.google.com/chromium/
there is a bugreport/feature request for windows 2000 at the official chromium bugzilla / roundup / issue list
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=547
while you are waiting, read the google chrome comic book
http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/
two people have solutions for getting it to work now!
thanks for posting your solutions in the comments!
In order to run Chrome under W2k, you need to install Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B54730CF-8850-4531-B52B-BF28B324C662&displaylang=en
Apparently you can according to this japanese guy:

edit: btw, none of these has worked for me and i still dont have chrome on my win2k box.

Very interesting analysis. I too dislike the fact that they don’t support Win2k.
I have a few old systems (800Mhz CPU, touchscreen) which I’d love being able to reuse with Google’s Chrome as a sort of Internet Kiosk… but these systems have very little ram (256MB) so Win2K would be much more appropiate than a full blown WinXP.
In fact, if I were Google I’d do a Google Chrome Embedded edition and compile it for NT4 upwards. :-D

cool idea i will check back here to see what happens I too would like to try Google chrome on a my win2k machine
September 3, 2008 at 1:48 am
I also would REALLY like to try Google Chrome. I use Win2K because I think it’s all that’s necessary and I won’t tolerate the DRM & “Mandatory Activation” in XP etc.

It really bugs me when stuff doesn’t run under W2K – it’s the OS I use 98% of the time, only booting up an XP machine as a last resort.
There’s so much high-quality software out there that’ll run happily on W2K upwards, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s just laziness that makes programmers code their apps for XP/Vista only.
Please keep trying to get Chrome to run, you’d be doing many thousands of people a big favour…

Thanks for this post. I use Win2k at work and was REALLY looking forward to trying out Chrome there, as I get serious slowdowns with firefox. I was a sad panda yesterday when I realized it doesn’t work with Windows 2000 right now. I hope you, someone, or google makes it so I (yeah, I’m selfish) can use it on my computer!

Yes, I also run Win2K and do not plan on ever “upgrading” to XP or Vista. If they aren’t going to support Win2K, then I guess I’ll have to wait for the Linux version and hope that it will run on Debian/Kubuntu.

must be some kinda aggreement or the windows api is just freaky crazy across versions

I run win2k as well. I could not see any reason to upgrade to XP and I’ll shift to PC-BSD if I end up completely shutout. I really do not enjoy operating systems that cost the earth have product activation and chew up huge amounts of memory (Vista).

@ Henry: Hey – thanks for that link! I tried the chrome2k.zip instructions, and was able to use Chrome in win2k.

Without which you will get :
the procedure entry point heapsetinformation could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll
You don’t need to use the Japanese registry hack to download chrome. You can download the full version directly from http://dl.google.com/chrome/install/149.27/chrome_installer.exe
September 6, 2008 at 1:50 pm
I use only Windows 2000 SP4 as my development machine. It’s solid. Never crashes. Give usable performance with minimal hardware. All the software I need runs perfectly on Win2K — EXCEPT CHROME!
It can’t be that hard to publish a Win2K version of Chrome. FF3 runs fine. Even early release versions of Java run fine. Put a little more effort into the Win2K version — PLEASE!!!!

I have listed an easier method for Windows 2000. Check here: http://nspeaks.com/348/google-chrome-on-windows-2000-works-with-my-method/
September 10, 2008 at 6:53 am
I used the Japanese method and it works perfectly. It appears that the developers expected 2k users to install it, which explains the warnings that not all functions might work in 2k. So far so good, recently it seems that a lot of software can be ported to win2k it just requires a little work. This only proves that MS are just trying to con us in to abandoning 2k when it is still a very viable OS.

I have win 95. Does it run under win 95?… Should I upgrade to 98?…
September 11, 2008 at 5:14 am
I don’t think it will be possible to get it to run in either 95 or 98. Both 2K and XP (vista for that matter) are built on NT technology, whilst 95 and 98 are really built on ms/dos. I hate to say this but 9x really is obsolete now. The situation with 2k and XP is pretty much like that between 95 and 98. Most programs written for 98 will run on 95. 2K and XP are so alike that many programs that claim not to support 2K will run perfectly on the OS, although sometimes you have to copy some XP dll’s to 2k to get all the functions.

Please, stop pointing to 149.27 that was the first release and the one that includes the security holes.
September 11, 2008 at 10:38 am
The latest release (at the time of this writing) is 149.29 and direct download URLs (bypassing the active installer) can be found here

windows win2k with chrome installed
2 simple process to go through. it works very well with 128 mb ram on a 987 mhz system. the only problem is everytime you start chrome it says, sorry some features may not work on windows 2000 etc apart from that everything seems to work.
why did Foogle only make this for xp ? vista, ? weird NT is the best system ever.
September 15, 2008 at 9:43 pm
I followed the instructions at
http://mysoogal.gotdns.org/?p=1519
and installed the reg file. When I followed the rest of the instructions on the page I wound up with a japanese version of chrome. whoops…
i found an english version of the file at
http://findfiles.com/list.php?string=ChromeSetup.exe&size=486128&db=Mirrors
I did the install, when chrome starts i get a warning that all features may not work. (none found yet). I am writing this from the chrome browser. (with a safari theme installed as well.)

June 11, 2009 at 12:25 pm
