cdrom halts windows/mac/linux?

how come a ‘bad’ or misread cd or dvd can bring any operating system to a halt? what is this shit? if you cant read my cd, dont fucking halt my box, just eject it.

had to force restart my mac box today. and since it has no manual eject button, i had to use the mighty paperclip hole.
